Though red is still the most popular color, and there are a ton advertisements for them, there is actually a meanings of roses behind the color and type of rose you send. While many of the recipients - mostly women - know this, often those sending the roses do not.

The colors of roses each symbolize something different. They each convey a message of their own, and unknowingly sending the wrong color to someone may hurt their feelings, or may actually lead them to believe you care more than you do. Legend has it that though Valentine was celibate himself, he secretly married young men who were forbidden to do so by a law established by the Roman Emperor Claudius II who believed that married men made for poor soldiers. Claudius had Saint Valentine arrested and it is likely that he was executed soon after.

It wasn't until the Middle ages and the Renaissance, when the idea of romantic and courtly love began to take hold that the holiday began to take on the spirit with which it is know today. A High Court of Love (it dealt with love contracts, betrayals, and violence against women) was established in Paris on February 14, 1400. Romantic references began to appear in the poetry of Geoffrey Chaucer, William Shakespeare and John Donne.

The commercial underpinnings of the holiday began when cards and verses began to appear in early 19th century England. Hand written notes on Paper Valentines became so popular that factories were established to mass-produce them. Lace and ribbons were added and, by mid-century, half the population was spending money on Valentines. Valentine's Day cards were first produced in the United States in 1847.

The practice of sending cards dominated the marketplace until the 1950s when gift giving began to become popular. A gift of flowers or candy became commonplace. Soon after, the jewelry industry began to promote Valentine's Day gifts with a special emphasis on diamonds.

· We will be adding a new local artist to our collection by the name of Bob Jones. He is a talented craftsman and creates unbelievable, functional artwork, made of wine barrel staves. He creates everything from candleholders to furniture. He will also personalize work for you.

· Along with the addition of Bob Jones we have many other featured local artisans in the shop. Their work consists of fine jewelry, photography, watercolor prints, hand dyed silk scarves, and handmade ink pens, just to name a few.

As a small businesswomen, and artist myself, I think it is extremely important to our society to support other local businesses and artisans within our community. It is true. Some people have allergies to flowers and can not be around them at all for any length of time without sneezing and feeling ill. Their affect can be so profound that some very allergic people will choose not to attend events and parties where they know there will be flowers of any kind to avoid the risk of becoming ill. There is no cure for flower allergies other than antihistamines and avoidance. But, your florist can help you come up with some ideas for these tough-to-shop-for customers and you will still be able to make their day brighter with flowers without making them ill.

While it may seem impossible, there are several flower gifts that will make life easier for those who receive them but suffer from allergies. While there are no hypoallergenic flowers, there are many that make great choices for those with mild allergies. Because pollen is a big culprit for triggering allergies, you will want to avoid flowers laden with pollen. This means you will want to avoid very fragrant flowers whose sent usually comes from the pollen within them.

Some great flower choices for people with allergies include:

Peggy Nethery has been the new owner of Green Valley Floral for over three years. Before that, she managed the shop for 7 years. Green Valley Floral has been in business for 28 years now.

Peggy has a total of 15 years experience in the floral industry. "I found my love for flowers through my grandmother and in her beautiful garden when I was a young girl, for that, I am eternally grateful," says Peggy.

"I can honestly say that I love what I do! I don't think many people can say that. Providing my customers with the very best is important to me. Every Wednesday I go to the Flower Mart in San Francisco to hand select the flowers we use in all of our arrangements. We are also now carrying silk flowers."

There are presently five employees; Kristi, Ginny, Marsha, and Roxana. I couldn't do it without them. They are awesome. We will be happy to meet your needs from custom floral arrangements, plants, unique gift items, funerals and corporate events. We specialize in weddings ~ our favorite!

Guys used to come into our flower shop often asking what types of flowers are appropriate for giving to their girlfriend. But first of all, I congratulate you for thinking of sending flowers to a lucky girl in the first place.

The first consideration in selecting which flowers to buy for your girlfriend is the stage you are at in your relationship. Is this your first date or have you been going out for a few months or a few years? Are you buying flowers for a special occasion or just to say I love you or I'm thinking of you? Let me attempt to answer all these questions...

If you want to bring flowers or get flowers delivered to your girl before your first date, the best idea is to send a small mixed bouquet of seasonal flowers, nothing extravagant, just a pretty little bouquet. If you have been going out for a while, a medium or large mixed bouquet would be well appreciated. This bouquet could be wrapped in cello or in a vase depending on where you are bringing the flowers.

If you are sending the bouquet to her house or apartment you could bring or get a vase bouquet or a wrapped bouquet. Poinsettia, The Christmas Flower

Once upon a time, a little Mexican boy was walking to church to see the Nativity scene. He thought hard about a gift to bring the Christ child, but had no money to buy one. "Jesus will understand," thought the little boy stopping to gather a few bare and weedy branches lying at the side of the dusty road, "because my gift will be given with love."

When the little boy reached his destination, people already in the church turned to see the gift he had brought and, when they saw what it was, they laughed at him.

As the little boy determinedly marched up to the altar and laid the branches by the edge of the manger, an abundance of bright red flowers suddenly began to bloom.

Since that day, the Poinsettia is known worldwide as The Christmas Flower.

Perhaps this story is a fairy tale. Perhaps not. Who is to say?

It's certainly true that the Poinsettia originated in the south of Mexico, wending its way to the United States of America in the admiring custody of one Joel Roberts Poinsett.

Poinsett (1779-1851), was born in Charleston South Carolina , and educated in Europe and the U.S., studying medicine, military strategy, and the law. He became a member of South Carolina's House of Representatives and subsequently held many prominent political positions. He also spearheaded the founding of the Smithsonian Institution.

Fluency in Spanish (as well as French, Italian and German) resulted in Poinsett's diplomatic appointment by President John Quincy Adams as the first United States Ambassador to Mexico (then called Minister of Mexico).

That was a tumultuous time in Mexico, and, to make matters even more difficult, Poinsett's impossible task was to buy the Mexican land we know as Texas, for a million dollars. However, the Mexicans did not want to sell Texas and, in 1829, they invited the hapless Ambassador Poinsett to leave.

In 1828, shortly before his absence was requested, Poinsett, an avid amateur botanist, was visiting the Mexican state of Taxco where he first saw the plant that would eventually be named after him. He shipped samples to South Carolina, where they were called "Mexican Fire Plant." The Aztecs had called the plant "Cuetlaxochitl," and from the 14th-Century to the 16th, used the sap to control fevers. The leaves were also used to make dye. Montezuma, the last of the Aztec kings, was forced to have Poinsettias caravaned from the south into what now is Mexico City because the plant could not grow in such high altitudes.

Upon his return to the U.S., Poinsett shared the plant with friends and botanical gardens worldwide. Around 1836, scholar William Hickline Prescott, author of The History of the Conquest of Mexico, and after whom the town of Prescott Arizona is named, was given the honor of renaming the plant. It has been known Poinsettia ever since.

While these facts are interesting, there are those of us who prefer the apocryphal tale of a little boy and the miracle of The Christmas Flower.

There are some beautiful ways to use floral pomanders to decorate your wedding reception. They look very charming when hung from the backs of the bride and groom's chairs at the dinner table. It is a nice way to make the seats special. The pomanders for the dinner chairs need not be particularly vivid, as long as they do not blend in with the color of the chairs or slipcovers (for instance, white pomanders hung on white chiavari chairs would not have much of an impact). They are usually made from similar flowers to the bride's bouquet, such as pale pink roses. As with pomanders for bridesmaids, it is a beautiful touch to use accents that coordinate with the bride's jewelry. Place pearl tipped hatpins between the blossoms to complement the bride's pearl earrings, or suspend a fabulous crystal tassel from the bottom of the pomander to coordinate with crystal bridal jewelry.

Pomanders have many more uses in weddings. They can be strung along porches, placed on stands as centerpieces, or hung over tables instead of chandeliers. If you love flowers and whimsy, floral pomanders might be just what you need for your wedding decorations.

The word "silk" is actually a broad term for any artificial flower created using conditioned fabrics, silk or not.

Many believe that since the nomenclature of "silk" was added to these artificial flowers, these flowers were first developed in China following the technology of extracting silk from pupae of silk moths. The veracity of these claims is still not entirely confirmed, as the indigenous Chinese people did create a diverse amount of silk-based craft, one of which could have been the first silk flower.

Although artificial flowers have existed throughout history and include ancient Egyptian flowers made out of papyrus, the recorded period of silk flowers begins in the 18th to the 19th centuries when Europeans wished to preserve the fleeting beauty of real flowers. Paris, the birthplace of many art forms, is also believed to be the birthplace of the modern silk flower. The first flowers were either made of crepe paper or silk fabric. The tradition of folding crepe paper into flowers is still taught in many art and craft schools around the world, being easy to learn. However, it is, as all other craft, very difficult to master. The silk fabric could easily be folded into a flower that could retain its shape for a long period of time if done properly.

In the early 20th century a large amount of research was performed on polymers and polymer-products which would eventually revolutionize the flower world. Celluloid became a promising raw material for recreating exquisite blooms in the 1920's when Japanese craftsmen became very versatile in the art. However due to its flammable nature, celluloid was soon banned from common use. In its place foam and other products soon crept their way into the silk flower industry and colored foam sheets as thin as petals were to overshadow crepe paper flowers. A small segment of traditional artists still folded real silk flowers, but these were very expensive compared to the foam flowers. Nevertheless, the accuracy and realistic look of silk flowers was rarely to be found with the foam flowers.

However, this was not the end of beautifully crafted artificial flowers. Recent advancements in technology have paved a new path for silk flowers. Cotton and polyester blend fabrics that are as soft as silk, while being a little more resistant to wear and tear have now become the base for artificial flowers of all kinds. These hold dyes and textures equally well and are cheaper to produce than real silk while retaining all the properties of real silk. The future of silk flowers now rests upon the advancements to these conditioned artificially produced fabrics and mold injected PVC. Even so, the silk folding craftsmen around the world still hold the true secrets of folding silk flowers perfectly, recreating the beauty of real flowers.

Preserving Fresh Flowers

The practice of preserving flowers has been around since colonial times. Flowers can be preserved in different ways such as air drying and pressing, or using various drying agents such as sand, homemade mixtures or silica gel.

Some flowers such as baby's breath, globe amaranth, cattail, and strawflower can be dried by simply hanging the stems upside down in a dark, well-ventilated area. This method, known as air-drying or the "hang and dry" method is one of the oldest methods used for preserving flowers. The darkness helps retain the color of the flowers. However, it has been observed that blue and yellow flowers retain their color whereas pink flowers fade when dried using this method.

Some chemicals like glycerin are also used to preserve flowers. "Bells of Ireland" is one specimen that shows good color variation when preserved this way.

Pressing is another technique used for drying fresh flowers. Flowers are neatly straightened and kept between sheets of paper and pressed over by some weight. This ensures that the pigments are not lost and the color is retained. Violets, pansies, larkspur and ferns preserve well when pressed in this manner. These dried flowers can be arranged in framed displays.

Sand is also used as a drying agent to preserve flowers. With sand drying method, prior to preserving flowers the sand is washed thoroughly with dishwashing detergent. It is then dried. The sand used should be very fine and salt-free. In this method, sand is placed in a container, and a small amount is scooped out to form a depression. The flower is placed in this depression and sand is pressed around to support the flower. Each petal is covered with sand ensuring that their shape is retained. The flowers when dried should be placed in cartons to prevent them from breaking.

You are probably familiar with birthstones, the tradition that people born in each month have a special gemstone. But did you know that there is also a flower associated with every month of the year? When you are planning a wedding, it is a wonderful idea to incorporate meaningful flowers into your bouquet. It would be lovely to include either the flower for your birth month or the special blossom for the month in which you will be wed. This is a guide to wedding flowers for every month of the year.

The flower for January is the carnation. This is a humble flower, but one that can easily be elevated to modern chic by the way in which it is arranged. Mound loads of carnations in tight clusters to create nifty pomanders and centerpieces in footed urns. February brides can enjoy the sweet old-fashioned charm of violets and primroses. Painted flowerpots filled with delightful violets would be quaint and lovely.

March ushers in the first breath of spring, and along with it the most quintessential spring flower: the daffodil. This cheerful yellow (or yellow and white) bloom is the perfect way to chase away the gloom of winter. Mini daffodils work especially well in bouquets. April bride or born? Try a bouquet of ruffly old fashioned sweetpeas, which come in wonderful shades of pink, peach, yellow, and lilac.

One of the most beloved of all wedding flowers is the birth flower of May, which is lily-of-the-valley. The tiny white or lilac colored blossoms make for lovely bouquets. They are best used in an arrangement that features only lily-of-the-valley. The delicate little flowers are sweet and absolutely iconic of a classic bride. Tie the bouquet with a simple white satin ribbon for the perfect finishing touch. Lily-of-the-valley is a flower that is best used when in season.

June is known as the month for brides, and so it can be no accident that two of brides' favorite things are also associated with the month of June. Classic roses and pearl bridal jewelry are both the symbols of June birth, and are cherished by women being wed in every month of the year. Roses are widely available all year round and in a fabulous selection of colors and varieties. You don't have to be a June baby to want to carry a big bouquet of roses on your wedding day.

The signature flower for July is the larkspur. A tall plant with a multitude of blossoms on every stem, the larkspur is an excellent addition to wedding arrangements in which height is needed, such as planters on the altar. The same is true for the August flower, the gladiola. As a matter of fact, I had white glads in my wedding flowers to give presence to the large ceremony arrangements.

Autumn born brides can enjoy flowers in rich fall tones. The aster is the September flower, and it is available in a great shade of red. The casual daisy-like aster also comes in pretty shades of purple and white. The flower for October is the marigold. Infrequently seen at weddings, the hardy marigold could nonetheless make a nice addition. The orange shades of the signature flower can be enhanced by pairing it with bridal jewelry created from opal colored Swarovski crystals (opal being the October birthstone).

Cold winter months bring with them some lovely signature flowers of their own. The flower for November is the mum, which can be a pretty and affordable addition to a late fall wedding. And finally, there is the Narcissus, which is December's flower. A beautiful bulb that is often forced in pots over the winter months, tiny pots with a single Narcissus would be fantastic as table decorations that could double as favors for your guests to take home.

It is always fun when you can find ways to add layers of meaning to your wedding. Including the signature flower for the month of your birth or the date of your wedding is a great idea. It will make your flowers not just beautiful, but also extra special.

Finding ways to honor our troops is something we need to try to do every day, but Memorial Day is especially poignant since that day has been set aside specifically for us to do so.
